Clarence R. "John" Gates, associate director of the Jet
Propulsion Laboratory, will retire Jan. 1, 1991, the Laboratory's
Director Lew Allen has announced.
Gates will be succeeded by Duane F. Dipprey, currently
assistant Laboratory director of JPL's Office of Technology and
Applications Programs, who will assume his new duties at that
time.
A veteran of many key technical and management positions at
the Laboratory, Gates has been with JPL for more than 40 years.
During his tenure, he led the team which designed the
prototype for JPL's first spacecraft to explore another celestial
body, Ranger to the Moon. He later oversaw development of the
1962 Mariner spacecraft to Venus.
Gates played an instrumental role during the early 1960s to
establish JPL as the world leader in radio tracking and space
navigation.
He joined JPL in 1950 and worked in a variety of areas,
including the Reliability Group, Communications Research Group
and Systems Analysis Section.
In 1963, Gates was appointed Technical Division manager and
managed several divisions which included spacecraft design,
navigation and computing.

He moved into senior management in 1981, becoming assistant
Laboratory director for Technical Divisions. In 1987, Gates was
named associate director of the Laboratory.
A native of Illinois, Gates, 64, was born in Belvidere,
Ill., and earned his bachelor of science degree in electrical
engineering in 1949 from the University of Oklahoma.
He received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering and
mathematics in 1951 from the California Institute of Technology.
Among his professional affiliations, Gates has been a member
of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA),
the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and
the honorary society Sigma Xi.
Gates is married, with three adult children, and resides in
Pasadena, Calif.
